WHAT the MTHFR? Unmaking the Mystery of MTHFR: Why you should care and what the heck is it?

What is MTHFR?

No, it’s not an acronym for something you’d rather not say out loud, although it is alot of fun to say!! MTHFR stands for Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase, a mouthful, I know. (Try saying that three times fast!) This little enzyme is basically the unsung hero responsible for methylation, which happens in every single cell of your body. Fun fact: MTHFR is a pretty common genetic variant, but when this enzyme isn’t pulling its weight, it can mess with how your body functions. Which can lead to a list of medical conditions. There are 9 different MTHFR variants out there, but the main troublemakers are C677T, A1298, MTR, MTRR, COMT and AHCY.

So, What’s the big deal about Methylation?

Methylation is basically your body’s internal handyman, handling all sorts of biochemical conversions in your cells. When someone has a genetic mutation in their MTHFR, their body isn’t as good at clearing out toxins. And guess what happens when toxins hang around too long? That’s right—serious health problems can crop up. Methylation isn’t just a random process; it’s crucial for things like:

- Cellular Repair: Think DNA and mRNA production, plus repair of nucleic acids.

- Detoxification & Neurotransmitter Production: It helps swap around amino acids to make sure your detox systems and brain chemicals are functioning.

- Immune System Function: It’s vital for creating red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Now, onto the nitty-gritty: the C677T variant tends to be tied to early heart disease and stroke, while the A1298C variant gets linked to chronic illnesses. But let’s be real—either mutation can lead to a long list of health issues. These MTHFR variants come in two flavors: heterozygous (one normal gene, one affected) or homozygous (two affected genes). If you're heterozygous, your enzyme efficiency will drop to about 60%, but if you're homozygous, it plummets to a measly 10-20%. Yikes.

And here’s the kicker: the worst combo is having one of each—C677T and A1298C—making you heterozygous for both. This double whammy is linked to chronic issues like fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, chemical sensitivities, recurrent miscarriages, frequent blood clots. and so much more.

Glutathione—your body’s superhero antioxidant and detoxifier—also takes a hit with MTHFR mutations. Low glutathione levels mean your body struggles with stress and can’t handle toxins like a champ, leaving you vulnerable to oxidative stress and, you guessed it, premature aging.

What Can You Do?

1. Get Tested:

The first step is finding out if you have an MTHFR mutation. This can be done through a simple genetic test. It’s an at home cheek swab test, super easy to do and no needles. I would recommend getting tested for all of the troublemakers! If that is not in the budget at the vary least get tested for the C677T and the A1289C.

2. Adjust Your Diet:

If you have an MTHFR mutation, focus on a diet rich in natural folate. Think leafy greens, legumes, eggs, and avocados. Avoid synthetic folic acid, often found in supplements and fortified foods, as it can be harder for those with MTHFR mutations to process.

3. Consider Supplements:

Supplements like methylated folate (5-MTHF), methylcobalamin (active form of B12), and riboflavin (B2) can support your MTHFR enzyme function. BUT get tested first to find out which variant you have because that will affect how you supplement.

4. Lifestyle Changes:

Managing stress, getting regular exercise, and avoiding toxins (like smoking and excessive alcohol) can help support your body’s methylation processes and overall health.

The Bottom Line:

Understanding MTHFR and its impact on your health can be a game-changer. By getting tested and making informed lifestyle choices, you can optimize your well-being and prevent potential health issues down the road. So, don’t let the complexity of MTHFR intimidate you. Embrace it as another piece of the puzzle in your journey to better health. After all, knowledge is power, and in this case, it might just be the key to unlocking a healthier, happier you.
